After filling out a brief survey (5-7 minutes), this profile tool will generate a personalized report. The report will describe the gaming motivations that were measured, and how you compare with other board gamers. Our recommender engine will also provide specific boardgame recommendations. Your responses may be used to refine the algorithms that generate the profile, and aggregate findings may be published in public or commercial reports. More details.
Who is running this survey project?
This survey project is run by long-time game researchers Nick Yee and Nic Ducheneaut as part of our consulting practice around game analytics. You can get a sense of our past work on gaming at The Daedalus Project, our academic papers, and Nick’s book on the psychology of online games. See also our profile tool for video games
What counts as a board game?
This profile tool is for players of modern board games (e.g., Agricola, Hive, Codenames, Twilight Struggle). Typically, board games are stand-alone products (with optional expansions) that can be played by a group. If a game expects each player to bring their own deck/army (e.g., CCGs, miniature wargames), it is likely outside the scope of this profile tool.
What are these profile tools?
These profile tools were developed using statistical analysis of how game preferences and personality traits cluster together. Your responses to the survey are compared with the responses of many other people, and your profile report is based on your percentile ranks on the preferences and traits measured.
How are you using the data I provide?
In addition to using your data to generate your customized report, we are constantly testing new items for the assessment tool and refining the algorithm that generates the scores. We may also report aggregate-level findings from the data collected (e.g., gender, age, or regional differences) in blog posts, journal papers, conference talks, and other public venues. Some of the findings may be used to create commercial reports for game companies.
